At ICN we really value our volunteers. As the number of our ICN service users continues to grow, our volunteers have become a critical part in supporting us and helping us deliver our services. 

As a small charity we welcome all those who apply, as we are regularly in need of volunteer support. Our needs are always changing due to the needs of those we support, so we cannot guarantee there will be a volunteering opportunity for everyone. Opportunities could include teaching or supporting our teachers in our ESOL department; looking after children in our creche; helping in our homework club or supporting our Activities Coordinator in the running of different activities.

Currently, our area of significant need for volunteers are within:
  • ESOL teachers (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, term-time only)
  • Female ESOL teachers for our community women’s classes (Monday and Tuesday afternoons, term-time only).
  • Creche help on a Monday and a Tuesday (Female and term – time only)
  • Supporting UASC (Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children) team with activities or in-house cover.
  • Interpreting – the most needed languages are Arabic, Urdu, Pashto, Farsi & Kurdish.

Applying as a volunteer – What should you expect?

Due to the sensitivity of the work we do at ICN in supporting vulnerable people and due to our safer recruitment and safeguarding commitment, we have quite a thorough volunteer application process. We welcome applications from all who would like to volunteer, but not all will be successful in applying. We hope you understand the measures we have to put in place in order to ensure the volunteers we recruit are suitable for the position.

What is our Volunteer Recruitment Process?

Firstly, we invite you to read more about who we are as a charity. We are a Christian charity, who work with people of all faiths and none. We don’t require volunteers to share a faith but would require volunteers to be sympathetic of and respectful of our Christian ethos.

Following the submission of your application, and if we feel you might be appropriate for a role with us, we would contact you to arrange a 30 minute meeting with our Volunteer Coordinator and a relevant manager or staff member. This will be an opportunity to ask any questions and discuss what would be expected of your volunteer role, and what you can expect from us!

After your interview and if we decide to progress your application, we will arrange a time for you to visit some of our activities to find the right position for you. Depending on your volunteer role and before you start officially volunteering, you will be required to undergo a DBS check and therefore provide relevant documentation to us. We will also need to contact two references to support your application. If you are successful, there will be some mandatory training you will be required to complete, as well as policies for you to read and agreements to sign. After you’ve started volunteering, our Volunteer Coordinator will be their to support you should you have any questions or should you need more support within your role.

    Please provide the details of two referees whom we may contact who can comment on your suitability for volunteering. If you don't have a professional referee, please provide another personal referee.
  • Someone who has known you for at least 12 months (this cannot be a family member)
  • Someone who has known you in a professional setting. This can be a former employer, client, colleague, teacher, supervisor.
  • Criminal Record Declaration

    Please note: Because of the nature of the duties the post holder may be asked to undertake, the successful applicant will be required to make a full declaration of their past criminal record or will be asked to co-operate in obtaining an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service before commencing working as a volunteer with ICN. As we are a charity, we do ask if you are able to contribute towards the cost of your DBS, which will depend on your volunteer role. However if you don't want to contribute or are unable to contribute this won't affect your application.
